Hotel President: professionalism and experience in mud therapy and bath therapy.
On the base of our experience and the most recent scientific evaluations of thermal medicine, we have developed specific and tailor-made protocols that we invite you to try. The following is some information relevant to the application methods of mud therapy at the Hotel President.
The Course of the Thermalcare® Protocol
At the arrival or the day after:
The thermal doctor looks over the available documentation and the case history and he visits the patient to prepare a personal chart where all the recommended treatments will be specified (such number of applications, duration, etc.).
In the morning from 6am till 12am:
Application of thermal mud and/or baththerapy according to the doctor’s prescription regarding the area to be treated, duration and temperature of the mud.
The session is carried out within a renovated environment and performed by professionals who work under a doctor’s supervision (the doctor is present in the hotel in the morning and afternoon). The mud application can also be performed in the Spa Suite in pairs. It is possible to have cryo-therapeutic applications or a specific body treatment in areas where the application of warm mud is not indicated. There’s a special Drink at the end of the session to restore the loss of water and mineral salt caused by sweating.
In the morning or afternoon, according to your needs:
One hour of therapeutic treatments to be chosen among the following:
- therapeutic massages,
- traditional physiotherapy,
- musculofascial treatments,
- thermal hydrokinesitherapy,
- reflexology,
- anti-stress pathways of Oriental derivation
Group exercises: muscular awakening exercises outdoors or in the gymnasium (depending on the season) with special attention to respiratory and postural training.
During the stay:
Medical check-up after 2 days of treatments.
At the end of the treatment cycle:
Medical check-up at the end of the treatments, final assessment of the care and preparation of the certificate, which the guest will deliver to his or her general practitioner.
Thermal mud and bath therapy practised at the Hotel President includes cycles of 10-12 sessions within a two week period with daily thermal mud applications at temperatures from 40-45° C for about 15 minutes. The treatment also includes a thermal bath with ozonized hydromassage at temperatures from 37-38° C for about ten minutes.

HOW DOES THE MUD THERAPY WORKS
The action mechanism, by which these cryotherapeutic means offer their beneficial effects, has always been considered an “empirical” method and classified within the alternative-complementary therapies. Nevertheless, the phenomenon’s growing importance has caused greater consideration in the scientific world. In the last years, the study on thermal therapy has allowed us to acquire useful information in interpreting the changes that these therapies cause in the human body. Several experiments have provided witnesses about the effects on the human body caused by mechanical, physical and chemical stimulations caused by the mud bath therapy.
The therapy’s complex action mechanism is due to thermal, neuroendocrinal and metabolic influences. At the local level, there is an intense coetaneous and muscular vasodilatation, an increase of articular flow with a wash out of algetic substances and muscular relaxation.
At the general level, thermal stress favours the release of hormones with anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, cortisol (the organic equivalent of cortisone used for inflammations) and endorphins (the so-called endogenous opioids, which are substances similar to morphine, produced by our body).
Currently, they are studying the specific anti-inflammatory effect of a GLYCOLIPID present in mature mud. The short term effects, already visible at the end of the cycle of treatments, are of antalgic and myorelaxing type. Furthermore, articular movement is improved. There is an anti-inflammatory action and articular and periarticular structures are stimulated. Long term benefits are visible, above all, as concerns prevention. In the months after care, new acute phases are reduced and the evolution of the treated pathology, which is generally arthritis, is slowed down.
Several experimental observations have provided evidence of pain-killing and anti-inflammatory effects as well as the capability of the mud bath therapy to stimulate the repair of cartilage.
The main purpose of these thermal treatments is to treat and prevent rheumatic pathologies in which the most diffused is osteoarthritis.
