Shoulder problems are the third most common complaint after back and cervical problems. One in five people (over 60) suffers from shoulder problems.

The most common problems are: painful shoulder (partial or total tear of the rotator cuff – calcific (or non calcific) tendonitis – arthritis in the shoulder)

Rotator cuff tears can occur for various reasons such as strain, repeated stress, or a change in the elasticity of the tissue itself which is typical in old age; in younger people (<35 years), the majority of rotator cuff tears is due to an injury.

Tendonitis in the shoulder is an inflammation of the tendons around the muscles of the rotator cuff or the biceps; there can also be calcium deposits on the bursa surrounding the muscles.

Shoulder arthritis is more common in older people and is due to the premature wearing away of the cartilage protecting the joint. The symptoms are pain in the shoulder itself or in the muscles surrounding the area; pain firstly restricts motion and at a later stage it can become difficult to carry out normal, everyday activities. Surgery is sometimes necessary for this condition; the joint can be replaced partially or totally by prosthetic metal implants (in titanium) which can be fixed to the bone without cement.

In cases of trauma, whether treated in a traditional way or with surgery, and in all patients who have developed problems due to strain, correct rehabilitation to regain the maximum functionality possible is of the utmost importance. The use of water in this type of rehabilitation can be very effective; movement is easier in water and the resistance it offers is distributed over the part of the body which is being moved in proportion to the speed of the movement, and so, in relation to the individual capacity of the person involved. For this and other reasons, movement in water is less painful and consequently easier for the patient. The exercises follow a logical progression including a warm-up phase, stretching, followed by more intense activity and then specific exercises to strengthen the muscles; the session can end with proprioceptive exercises. Based on the doctor’s indications, the physiotherapist will recommend any changes that need to be made according to the different types of pathologies and each individual patient’s specific requirements.

The necessity for hip replacement surgery is often a result of acute arthritis when the pain caused by the degeneration of the articular cartilage makes it impossible to move and carry out normal activities. In total hip replacement surgery, both the articular component (prosthetic cup and its insert), and the femoral component (femoral stem and prosthetic head) are replaced. An endoprosthesis is when only the femoral component (stem) and prosthetic head is replaced; this operation is usually carried out due to a fracture at the top of the femur.

The artificial hip joints can be cemented or non-cemented depending on which method is used to attach the prosthesis to the bone. Whatever the case, after the operation, rapid and efficient rehabilitation is always necessary.

Following an initial passive mobilization period, after about two weeks an important step is hydrokinesitherapy, or rather carrying out movements and specific exercises in water.

Considering the ever increasing number of patients undergoing this type of operation as well as the difficulty in finding places qualified to carry out hydrokinesitherapy in the area, the Hotel President in AbanoTerme is offering its clients a SPECIFIC POST HIP OPERATION REHABILITATION PROTOCOL.

To obtain the best results we suggest a 1-2 week stay. Our rehabilitation package begins when the staples are removed which is usually 2 weeks after the operation. This is in fact the moment when hydrokinesitherapy, or therapeutic exercise in thermal water, is most effective. The aims of rehabilitation at this stage are to recuperate movement in the joints, begin to strengthen the muscles, begin walking again and placing “partial weight” on the limb which has been operated on.

From the third week onwards, the rehabilitative aims are to reach the maximum articulation possible and to progressively bear full weight on the operated leg, so that in week 4-5 the patient can walk autonomously without any supporting devices.

In order to understand the importance of rehabilitation in water, we should consider the particular physical qualities of water such as Archimedes’ principle of buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, density and heat. Moreover, being immersed in water is a pleasant sensation as the body is supported and becomes lighter (up to 95% lighter when fully immersed), making articulation easier, more fluid and ample. This is a determining factor when trying to walk again as it allows the patient to move naturally without any support, while respecting the gradual progress recommended by surgeons.

Redentore in Venice

On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July, the celebrations of the Festa del Redentore, one of the most important events in Venetian tradition, will take place in Venice.

The Festa del Redentore is a very important event for the Venetians and is also much loved by the tourists; an event which mixes the sacred with the profane it attracts many visitors every year.

To trace the origins of this event, we must go back a long way, right back to 1577 to be exact, the year in which Venice saw the end of a terrible plague which killed many people. While a large part of Venice’s population was being wiped out by the plague, the Doge declared a solemn vow and promised to build a large church in order to ask for an end to the plague and save the city from destruction. So, in 1576 the Senate of Venice ordered the construction of the Redentore Church (Redeemer Church), which was designed by Andrea Palladio, and in May 1577 the first stone was laid on the Giudecca Island.

Ever since 1577, the Ventians have continued to celebrate the end of the plague with the Festival of the Redentore, which is traditionally held on the third Saturday and Sunday of July. On the Saturday, the Thanksgiving boat bridge is decorated on the Giudecca Canal: by crossing this bridge visitors can reach the island of Giudecca from the Zattere. The celebrations begin with the blessing of the Patriarch of Venice on the steps of the Chiesa del Redentore (Redeemer Church), just as the the bridge is opened up for the procession of the believers towards the Church, where Holy Mass is celebrated.

Besides the religious importance of the Festival, the Festa del Redentore is also famous for its “profane” and folkloristic features which are much appreciated by the visitors who come from all over the world to take part in this important Venetian festival. Of all the wonderful moments which make up the two days of the Festa del Redentore, some of the most unforgettable sights are the fantastic firework display that lights up Saint Mark’s basin on the Saturday night, and the gondola races which close the celebrations.

Opera Festival at the Verona Arena

On 17th June the curtain will rise on one of the most awaited events of the summer, the Opera season at the Arena of Verona.

Now in its 89th year, Verona’s Opera Festival hosts performances of some of the most well-known and well-loved operas, all performed in the unique and magnificent setting of the Arena of Verona.

This year’s Festival will open with Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata. To celebrate the occasion of the 150 years of Italy’s unification, the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, will be present at the inauguration and Mameli’s Italian anthem will be sung at the opening ceremony.

Following the opening night, the Festival will go on throughout the summer until 3rd September, with a rich programme offering 49 performances and six operas: as well as La Traviata, other Verdi operas will include Aida and Nabucco. This year’s programme also includes Gioachino Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème and Charles Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet. Everyone is particularly excited about the presentation of two new productions of La Traviata and Romeo and Juliet; the first will be directed by Hugo de Ana and conducted by Carlo Rizzi, while the latter will be directed by Fabio Mastrangelo. Gianfranco de Bosio directs the other Verdi operas, Aida (which will be conducted by Daniel Oren) and Nabucco (conducted by Julian Kovatchev), both performed in their historical setting. Hugo de Ana also directs Il Barbiere di Siviglia, with the orchestra conducted by the young Veronese conductor Andrea Battistoni who will be making his debut at the Arena, while La Bohéme will be directed by Arnaud Bernard and conducted by John Neschling. The stage will host some of the most famous names from the opera world, as well as some up and coming artists.
